Summary on Grant Application Form |
A detailed study of magnetic order in crystalline organic molecular solids will be carried out. The types of solid used will be (i) organic ferromagnets based on Nitronyl Nitroxide, (ii) metallic charge-transfer salts exhibiting spin-density-wave antiferromagnetism, and (iii) metallic charge-transfer salts incorporating magnetic ions. The influence of molecular overlaps will be probed by examining samples of different chemical composition and by hydrostatic pressure. Detailed measurements of bandstructure will be made using the angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillation (AMRO) and Shubnikov-de Haas techniques in order to understand the prerequisites for magnetic order. Specific heat experiments and quantitative magnetometry will provide further spatial and thermodynamic information o the magnetic groundstates, and the results will be compared with complementary muon spin rotation measurements. The experimental work will involve the construction of a simple, versatile differential susceptometer, a cryostat for AMRO under hydrostatic pressure and a specific heat apparatus, and their use in a new 17 T superconducting magnet. In view of the simplicity and versatility of the organic solids, the results obtained are likely to be of interest to a wide scientific community.
