Summary on Grant Application Form
The work will investigate the design of a new ultrasonic transduction system, which can be used to inspect ceramic samples without contact. This will use a novel design of capacitance transducer that can operate in air. The system will first be used to form a C-Scan image of green-state ceramics, formed for instance by slip casting or injection moulding, the aim being to detect changes in structure (such as density variations) that could lead to defects on firing. Further developments in the instrumentation will then be made to allow measurements to take place at high temperatures. This system will then be used to monitor the burn-out of polymer binder in injection-moulded components.
