Summary on Grant Application Form
Thin film growth (sputtering) will be established. Films (and eventually multilayers) grown with it, and from other sources, will be studied by a multidisciplinary team. The emphasis will be on relating structural to physical behaviour. Collaborations with other groups and industry will be central. The highly successful programme studying vortex behaviour in HTS will focus on the influence of anisotropy and inter-layer coupling on pinning and critical currents. The collaborations with conductor-fabricating groups will emphasise current distributions in mono- and multi-filament tapes and ribbons. Power dependence of thin film microwave losses will be related to their structure. The study of super-semi device structures will be completed, and we will initiate a project on field-effect structures.
