Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a three phase project to develop and understand the process of cavitation as a means of disinfection. Engineering models will be developed to assess, in detail, the effects on bacteria, parasites and viruses. Microbicidal activity will be monitored by bioluminescence, and the generation of heat shock proteins (for bacteria), by electron microscopy, RT-PCR and cell culture (viruses), and egg culture and microscopy (for the protozoon, C. Baylii). Microbicidal efficiency will be optimised in the first phase and, if successful, will result in the development of larger scale devices. These devices will be used in field tests in phase 3.
