Presently, at the domestic level, little regard is paid either to minimising water consumption, to utilising appropriate quality water for appropriate purposes or to renovating polluted water prior to disposal. In the sustainable city, society must move towards the goal of both decreasing per capita consumpion and per capita pollution. The reuse of grey water and rainwater reduces the utilisation of potable water for non-potable applications with the water being effectively used twice before discharge to the sewer. Previous research has indicated that rainwater only systems require large collection tanks, but treatment is not necessary. The converse applies to grey water only collection systems. This proposed research therefore aims to study the viability of collecting both rainwater and grey water and rainwater pre- and post-treatment and devising a (quantity and quality) computer model for system design and optimisation. A prototype recycling system will be installed in a residential property and its performance tested. The economic and social viability of the system will be assessed. Potential beneficiaries from this work include manufacturers, water companies and water users.
