Summary on Grant Application Form |
Rare-earth doped silica fibres are an excellent medium for optical amplifiers as well as cw, single frequency, Q-switched and modelocked fibre lasers. However, at room temperature rare-earths in silica are predominantly homogeneously broadened, which can limit the performance of the resultant devices in some applications. This proposal aims to explore the use of periodic spatial hole burning in multicore rare-earth doped fibres to controllably introduce inhomogeneous broadening of design strength and bandwidth into the gain/absorbing medium. The development of channel equalising optical amplifiers, multi-wavelength and single frequency fibre lasers as well as passive tracking optical filters will be pursued.
