Summary on Grant Application Form
Future ASTOVL aircraft are being proposed which involve various configurations of hot and cold lift jets. The ground-effect phase of operation involves jet impingement and introduces complex fluid mechanical phenomena (fountain upwash, hot-gas reingestion). Little experimental information is available for the mixing and temperature fields accompanying many of the proposed jet configurations. This project aims to construct an experimental facility to study various lift jet scenarios at the fundamental level (i.e. an isolation from airframe considerations). An experimental database will be assembled to aid propulsion system design, including validation data for CFD studies.
