Summary on Grant Application Form
It has been demonstrated that thin surface layers of nematic liquid crystals form a twisted nematic structure when subjected to a shear stress as flow passes over the surface. The time to form the structure depends on the shear stress and this provides a means of measuring this quantity. New liquid crystal materials are now available which increases the viscosity and thus increase the time. This makes full surface measurements a possibility and represents a novel application of nematic liquid crystals.
