Summary on Grant Application Form
Upflow biological aerated filters (BAFs) will be compared to downflow systems for secondary and tertiary sewage treatement. Initial experiments will be undertaken on a pair of pilot BAFs at the University's sewage works treating settled sewage. Upflow and downflow performance will be monitored over a range of organic loadings. BOD, solids and ammonia removals, and biomass yield and oxygen transfer efficiencies will be monitored. A previously developed model developed to describe BAF performance will be validated by the results. This will help determine whether upflow or downflow has better kinetics. Off-gas analysis (oxygen and carbon dioxide) will be used to detect the differences in performance and overall efficiency.
