Summary on Grant Application Form |
Thixoforming is an innovative manufacturing method which allows radical improvement in existing products and process, rapid prototyping, customer responsiveness and near net shaping. It is ripe for commercialisation. The aim of this project is to do just that, through establishing a UK capability for manufacturing thixoforming production equipment at competitive prices, through production of demostrators for testing by user companies and through development of cost/benefit analysis. The consortium involves both potential users (Lucas, T&N and Brook-Crompton), potential equipment manufacturers (Servotest and Rotary Electrical), a potential sub-contractor (ATM) and a supplier of advanced aluminium alloys (ASP). The University of Sheffield is a world leader in thixoforming research and development. It also has extensive experience in cost/benefit analysis in the Manufacturing System Management Unit. The ultimate aim of this interdisciplinary project is thus to pull through University research into the market place.
