Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed work will evaluate the detailed joining requirements of airframe structures and identify significant areas where mechanical fastners can be replaced by welding. The work will focus on the joining of aluminium and titanium alloys. Several potential process options (Bipalor TIG and Plasma welding, Laser augmented TIG and flux assisted TIG welding) will be investigated and the most suitable will be selected for further development. The chosen processes will be developed to enable fully automated operation with integrated programming and quality control.
