Summary on Grant Application Form
This part of the project has been designed to provide a fundamental understanding of the degradation mechanisms which occur in glass reinforced polymers (polyester and acrylic) when they are subjected to mechanical loads, high intensity electrical fields and aqueous environments. Studies will be made of water absorption and surface tracking in specially designed rigs. The pattern of water take up in the resins will be examined and microscopic examination of the damage which results when electrical discharge occurs will take place. The influence of glass fibre-resin interfaces, fibre orientation and oxide additions to the resin on the damage patterns will be characterised. The results will be made available to industrial partners to provide guidance on manufacturing methods for the material and for the improved design of insulation.
