Summary on Grant Application Form |
Hidden Markov modelling has been the major successful method in recent advances in the recognition of continuous speech. Recognition of handwritten words is similar to continuous speech recognition, insofar as both suffer from merging and distortion of basic units: phonemes or characters. Recent work, by authors including the current applicants, has demonstrated the effectiveness of HMMs for recognition of noisy characters. The current proposal intends to extend this work to handwritten or hand printed word recognition. This will involve research into representations for characters and the development of level building schemes to incorporate content.
