Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research proposes to investigate the physical causes of the limitations to the critical current density (Jc) of silver/high temperature superconductor composite tapes. These limitations are currently restricting the commercialisation of these materials. Because of the intense pressure to bring products to the market place, the problems of the decrease in Jc as length increases and strain cycling are still not well understood. The research intends to study the effect of thermal and strain cycling on the Jc. The distribution of Jc along the length of tapes will also be measured. Models using fracture mechanics and finite element techniques will be developed to explain the experimental results. The results should help to determine the underlying problems and where the practical limits lie. The results should help the UK HTS tape program in the move towards commercialisation.
