Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research seeks to exploit technological advances in machine tool structures, process monitoring and control and non-product specific holding/fixturing systems to build an integrated environment for rapid component manufacture in which manufacturing responsiveness can be improved. The aim is to tightly couple component design information, non-specific holding/fixturing methods, machine operations planning, CNC code generation and process control into a rapid response manufacturing environment for producing finished parts using appropriate levels of operator intervention. This will be achieved through the development of an integrated environment - a Rapid Response Manufacturing Cell (RRMC) - to act as a testbed for one-of-a-kind/small batch machined parts. Feature based design; in-process and post-process monitoring and control and learning strategies; modular, magnetic and bi-phase materials are among the methodologies and systems used in the research.
