One of the central problems of representation theory is the determination of composition factors and their multiplicities in modules; a particular case is that for the highest weight modules arising from Lie theory where there are the Kazdhan-Lusztig conjectures.One approach has led to the concept of quasi-hereditary algebras. Many important algebras which occur naturally are quasi-hereditary, including the classical Schur algebras, the generalised Schur algebras, and q-Schur algebras, which are q-analogues (deformations) of classical Schur algebras.The study of these specific algebras will give insight into general properties of quasi hereditary algebras, and thus contribute to the general study of quantum groups and the fundamental conjectures in the Lie theory.
