Summary on Grant Application Form |
Our aim is to develop analytical and computational methods for the analysis of quantum effects associated with classical spatio-temporal correlations in nonlinear optical systems. We will focus our investigations on the optical parametric oscillator because it is the simplest device which produces both spatial patterns and strongly nonclassical behaviour. Moreover, experiments are planned on these aspects of parametric oscillators by our collaborators in Paris. The programme will follow two converging lines of investigation, one devoted to the computational simulation of the quantum patterns and the second to the interpretation of the simulations. The first will require the development of a computer program for the solution of stochastic partial differential equations for the quantum fluctuations. Averaging over many realisations will enable us to obtain statistical properties associated with the correlations. We believe that individual simulations also have physical significance. We will test this by developing an analytical model of the homodyne detection of the output from an optical parametric oscillator.
