Colossal magnetoresistance (R(H = 0) - R(H = 2T))/R(H = 2T) = 127,000% at 77K) has recently been observed in perovskites containing manganese in an oxidation state between + III and + IV. The effect appears to be very strongly dependent on manganese oxidation state, and we propose to use our experience in solid state chemistry to optimise CMR, in combination with detailed physical and structural characterisation. We will search for CMR in other MnIII/MnIV systems (Ruddlesden-Popper phases, pyrochlores) and attempt to extend the effect to oxides of other transition metals selected on the basis of electronic configuration (FeIV/CoIV, FeIV/MnIV, FeIV/IrIV, FeIII/FeIV). The synthesis of new CMR systems offers both the prospect of materials with enhanced properties for applications and the development of a detailed microscopic understanding of the mechanism of the effect, through elucidation of the relationship between electronic structure, crystal and magnetic structure, and magnetotransport properties. The interdisciplinary project team has the necessary ability and track record in solid state chemistry (synthesis and structure determination) and physics (magnetotransport, uSR) to undertake the programme, and generate results of interest both to the scientific community and industry.
