We seek to develop and understand the processing of the new polyolefins made available by metallocene catalysis and the new polyesters such as poly(ethylene naphthalate), poly(butylene napthalate) and related materials made viable by cheaper intermediates. We propose to investigate the influence of molecular weight and branch content on the true-stress/strain/strain-rate relationships of polyolefins of controlled morphologies to aid the development of high molecular weight materials of improved strength. In addition, we will perform tensile drawing and characterisation studies of the polyesters to identify the influence of processing conditions on the formation a molecular network and the development of crystallinity or an ordered mesophase which ultimately determine the properties of the oriented products. We also seek to predict the mechanical properties of oriented amorphous or semi-crystalline materials from an atomistic starting point. A study of the fluctuations in size during constant pressure molecular dynamics will yield mechanical properties of amorphous or crystalline material. We will then utilise our composite modelling expertise to predict the properties of semi-crystalline materials of given morphologies. These two objectives are combined since the products and property measurements made in pursuing the first objective will provide data for comparison with the predictions arising from the pursuit of the second.
