Summary on Grant Application Form |
Since the deregulation of the UK telecommunications market attention has been focused on the local access networks with a particular interest in providing new services for the home. These have centred on home entertainment and the specialist provision of home working, This research programme however has a new emphasis in the field of customer service provision. An important aspect of this work is that a service should be provided to the widest community. In this respect, modular customer access units will be designed to provide connection and dedicated client/server protocols will be developed to offer an interactive multi-media interface for the home environment. These services will be fully integrated with a company's existing customer information databases and will greatly enhance the customer's accessibility and response. Customers will also find it more convenient to obtain after sales service by arranging delivery dates and maintenance attention from their own homes with immediate confirmation. A multi-media sales database will be configured to provide carefully tailored product advertising with both descriptive and visual information. Where the telecommunications access permits, this will be extended to include real time video and audio presentation. With carefully structured electronic forms, the user will be able to specify their requirement resulting in the display of appropriate product information. A signficant part of the research programme is a series of extensive user trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the overall service and system.
