In case of recycling of consumer and producer aluminium scrap, and aluminium scrap created by automobiles and aircrafts, a number of undesirable metallic impurity elements become an integral part of molten aluminium scrap. These impurities affect very adversely the physical and mechanical properties of cast product. At the present moment either chlorine or fluorine gas is injected in molten metal scrap to remove metals such as magnesium, lithium, strontium and sodium as salts. However, in an inefficient metallurgical process, this will lead to the generation of environmentally unacceptable effluents and slags which need special procedures for disposal. In the present investigation we propose to investigate the feasibility of using titanates and manganates, which have relatively open crystal structure, to remove impurity elements such as Mg, Li, Ca, Na from molten aluminium scrap by simple ion exchange technique. This method will not produce any environmentally unfriendly effluents or slags.
