Summary on Grant Application Form |
The `information highway' gives users global access to multimedia information; hypermedia is a key technology for integration and navigation of this information, as demonstrated by the success of the WorldWide Web (WWW). Current hypermedia solutions are specialised, do not scale well in the context of large, dynamic and complex information systems, and make assumptions about the underlying network technology. This project addresses the application of software agents to provide scalable hypermedia services for multimedia information systems (MMIS), and aims to provide exemplar agents in three important areas: automation of resource discovery, information maintenance and integration. The project is application-driven, focusing on corporate information systems as these typify the problems and stand to benefit significantly from this technology. The rle of our corporate collaborator is to assist in identifying requirements and to evaluate prototypes of the exemplar agents. The research will be based on the Microcosm hypermedia link service, which integrates and extends WWW, and will adopt emerging standards in order to facilitate exploitation.
