Summary on Grant Application Form |
This is a collaborative research proposal between the Department of materials Technology at Brunel university and the ORC at the University of Southampton. Thermally stable fluoroaluminate glasses doped with Nd3+ will be fabricated and evaluated as host for second-window amplifier and laser devices. The glasses will be modified to blue-shift the gain curve to the centre of the second window. This will be achieved by changing the relative strengths and positions of the emission and ESA spectra. An efficient mechanism for the suppression of ASE will be developed and deployed. Two main approaches will be investigated: co-doping with a suitably absorbing ion, and writing an in-fibre Bragg grating. Thermal and optical properties of core and cladding glasses will be optimised, and perform and fibre fabrication methods will be refined. High-quality, low-loss, high NA, single-mode Nd-doped fibres will be drawn. A laboratory prototype second-window amplifier device will be built and evaluated. Similar methods will be used to build and test a short fibre laser.
