Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme has four main interdependent components and seeks to build on the conspicuous success of recent research carried out at Oxford and involving hydrides of the metals of groups 12 and 13.1. Synthetic studies will be directed towards the goals of new tractable, molecular derivatives of the elements of Groups 12, and 13 and 15 bonded to substituents like H and BH4 likely to function as good leaving groups. These will typically entail the use of rigorously clean high-vacuum conditions and the exploration of metathesis, solvolysis or addition reactions starting from halide, organo or alkali-metal derivatives of the Main Group element.2. The chemistry of the compounds will be explored, with particular reference to their decomposition, ability to form adducts with suitable Lewis bases or acids, and potential as sources of the parent elements or of useful compounds of these elements.3. Detailed physical characterisation of selected derivatives will be effected by a wide range of appropriate techniques, viz. matrix isolation, vibrational, rovibrational, microwave, EPR, photoelectron, and NMR spectroscopies, and diffraction methods, mainly to resolve problems of structure and bonding.4. Mechanistic studies involving both new and known compounds will be undertaken to chart the course of selected CVD processes; these will typically depend on both matrix-isolation and surface studies.
