Summary on Grant Application Form |
We shall use computational techniques to predict structures formed through the interplay of defects with the bulk, interfaces and surfaces of ceramic materials. Both statics and molecular dynamics methods will be used to study the following systems: planar defects and interfaces in ZnO and SrTiO3, the formation of thin films through molecular deposition and melting of nano clusters, volatile fission products in highly oxidised nuclear fuels, CeO2 based exhaust catalysts and inorganic nano-particles in zeolites. Particular attention will be paid to the derivation of the interionic potentials. To understand the inherent complexity of these structures and to compare results with experiment, it is necessary to employ high quality visualisation software only available on the type of work station being requested.
