It is proposed to establish NMR as a method of choice for oxygen diffusion studies in oxides. A unique NMR facility within the UK will be established based on the well developed expertise at Kent. Spectroscopic relaxation and diffusion techniques will be applied in a comprehensive study of Zr02 to establish defect structures, oxygen and transport mechanisms over a wide temperature range up to 1650C bulk and nanocrystal forms where appropriate. Theoretical work and modelling required for interpretation of data will be developed in parallel with experimental investigation. These will be used as a basis to extend the project to the study of other pure and doped oxides such as Mg0 and La2O3. The results will provide fundamental information on materials of advanced technological significance in fields such as fuel cell, sensor and ceramic membrane technology. The technique development will have implications for the study of transport in other difficult systems such as A1 diffusion in advanced metallic alloys.
