Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this work is to contribute to an understanding of the physics of heavy fermion compounds comparable, in its appreciation of the underlying microscopic interactions as well as in its utility, with that already achieved for simpler metals. To achieve this we propose to continue our study of Landau Quantum Oscillations in the heavy fermion state. Resulting from the relatively low excitation energies, experiments will be performed at temperatures as low as ~1 mK to satisfy the fundamental requirement, twc>kBT. Measurements of the dHvA effect will be made in a representative group of cerium based systems to study the heaviest quasiparticles, the phase diagrams and the nature of the Fermi liquid state. dHvA studies will, for the first time, be extended into the superconducting state of heavy fermions in an attempt to establish the symmetry of the order parameter.
