Several liquid crystal devices can be affected by unwanted changes in texture caused by transitions from one state to another. By choosing a cell with sinusoidal boundaries, the symmetry of the solutions is broken and one solution is selected ahead of others. This ground state can become unstable at higher field strengths (and so extend the range of usefulness of the device). Its subharmonics can restabilise via a subcritical imperfect pitchfork bifurcation, raising the possibility of a new type of switching device. This study will examine 3 important types of transition and establish boundary wavelengths at which optimum device performance can be expected.
