Summary on Grant Application Form
A refrigeration/heat pump cycle based on solid adsorption has been patented by the principle investigator and the proposed RA. We have obtained good results for the forced convective heat and mass transfer between the beds of granular adsorbent and the refrigerant that form the heart of the concept. Before it can undergo commerical development, research is needed on the interaction and control of the four regenerative beds that form a complete system. A 10 kW gas-fired chiller will be designed, built and tested in the laboratory. Different control strategies will be investigated for their benefits in terms of good energy efficiency or compactness and the trade-off between the two. The results obtained will be equally applicable to refrigerators, heat pumps or thermal transformers. The benefits are: high energy effiicency, environmentally friendly use of ammonia (an ozone friendly refrigerant with no greenhouse effect) and high wealth creation for the UK manufacturing industry.
