Summary on Grant Application Form |
In many of the existing and newly-emerging applications for ferroelectrics, there is a need to machine them to a high degree of mechanical precision. Not only is precision important but also the degree of sub-surface damage should be minimised because this is known to compromise performance by engendering depoling and is also likely to lead to ageing and noise effects caused by the movement of damage-induced domain walls and cracks. The objective of this programme is to study the basics of diamond machining of ferroelectics and to develop a process model, with particular reference to the use of ductile-mode machining and whether the ferroelastic nature of the domain walls in such materials can be used to advantage, elimination of the unwanted characteristics of brittle-mode machining of these types of materials, and examination of the effects of different crystallographies on the machining of these materials.
