Summary on Grant Application Form |
Normally residual stress experiments gather data which encompasses the full Bragg diffraction peaks of particular reflections as a function of position within a sample. Usually only the peak position information is made use of as it is simply related to the elastic strain in the material. This proposal is to carry out experiments to test an idea that plastic strain can be simply evaluated along with elastic strain by carrying out a material calibration experiment as well as residual stress measurements. This would enable much greater use to be made of data that is already routinely gathered and enable routine tests of both plastic and elastic strains to be carried out non-destructively using neutrons.
