Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal concerns a programme of work aimed at increasing the service life of carbide tools used in abrasive wear situations. The prime mechanism to achieve this result will be by using ion implantation technology to improve the durability of the surface and sub-surface layers of the substrates thereby reducing the tendency of carbide tools to fail in a brittle manner. Validation of the work will be by a number of case studies involving, for example, pressing or punching operations where it is anticipated that the carbide grades and the implantation parameters will be tailored to the specific industrial requirements.
