Summary on Grant Application Form
interparticle forces play a critical role in the performance of powder processing and handling operations. The adsorption of moisture is predicted to modify forces due to van der Waals or electrostatic attraction. Furthermore it can greatly increase the force of adhesion between particles with rough surfaces by filling in the gaps between contact sites, thereby providing an increase in contact area. The adsorbed layers are also predicted to interact to produce a capillary bridge which clamps the particles together. Direct force measurements between individual particles are proposed using an atomic force microscope with a modified cell through which air of a known humidity will be measured in a separate microbalance apparatus. The AFM will also be used to characterise the surface topography of the particles. The force-distance curves from the AFM will be studied to provide information on the nature of the forces prior to, and at contact.
