Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is to improve our fundamental understanding about the mechanisms of defect formation and grain-growth during the sintering process of powder compacts. The current lack of understanding in this area is mainly due to the difficulty of analysing the diffusion process for a complex network of grain-boundaries and pores. The existing sintering theory is based on idealised analytical models of the material and ignores inhomogeneity, anisotropy and nonlinearity. Funded by the EPRSC, a systematic numerical technique has been developed for the diffusion analysis by Pa and Cocks. Using this technique, a series of large scale computer simulations will be carried out to investigate the formation mechanisms and sintering kinetics of large pores and anisotropic structures, the kinetics of early stage grain-growth and the conditions when non-linearity (the interface reaction) has to be considered. Preliminary experiments will be carried out to verify the numerical models.
