Summary on Grant Application Form |
Hard chromium plating is an important engineering coating with a unique combination of inherent properties and has proved to be very difficult to replace with alternative coatings. The deposition process is harmful to the health of workers and there are proposals for more restrictions on its use. The proposed project is directed at providing comparable coatings by environmentally acceptable electroplating processes at economic cost. The project will develop the much less toxic trivalent chromium electrolytes to produce chromium and chromium alloy coatings. Tribological and corrosion performance will be maximised by the control of the deposition parameters and electrolyte composition through an understanding of property mechanisms and their interrelationships with structure and processing.
