We propose using a novel flash pyrolysis method to produce reactive inorganic/organometallic carbonyl fragments in a supersonic jet expansion. Structural data will be deduced through observation of the gas phase infrared absorption spectra recorded by sensitive, high-resolution diode laser spectroscopy in a highly cost-effective experiment. Although generated by pyrolysis, in all cases the jet expansion will produce cold spectra, essential for successful analysis. Pyrolesis fragmentation patterns will be monitored and optimised with the aid of mass spectrometry. We plan to study two principal groups of complexes. Firstly, bare metal carbonyl fragments M(CO)x, and their adducts with rare gas atoms, produced from the hexacarbonyls of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten. Secondly, complexes formed by combining these highly reactive carbonyl fragments with small organic molecules/ We anticipate that the main beneficiaries will be researchers working in industrial laboratories investigating and developing CVD and homogeneous catalysis. An additional boon for theoretical chemists will be the insights into transition metal bonding and structure provided by this work.
