The downstream interaction of a bed-generated turbulent boundary-layer with internal waves generated upstream by interfacial shear is frequently observed in partially and strongly stratified macro-tidal estuaries during ebb tide. However, in density-homogeneous flows in compound channels, secondary currents, generated by turbulence anisotropy, can significantly affect lateral mixing and hence dispersion processes along the channel. How does a vertical density stratification in an estuarine situation affect this mixing process? The research investigates this interaction by conducting a combined laboratory scale flume and numerical experiments of a two-layer stratified shear flow. Using Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) and a newly developed Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) technique we aim to simultaneously measure the velocity and concentration fields and their turbulent fluxes along the channel to study the secondary circulation and mixing processes, to create benchmark data for the calibration of anisotropic turbulence models in stratified flow conditions and to use this data for testing and refining existing numerical code. The research is expected to shed light on dispersion processes which dominate the ebb phase of macro-tidal estuaries.
