There has been much interest recently in the concept of using information from the motor cortex region of the brain, recorded using non-invasive scalp electrodes, to interface with a computer. It is known that movements of the limbs, for example, are preceded by a desynchronisation and change in the cortical electroencephalogram (EEG). This Event-Related Desynchronisation (ERD), however, appears to be present when volition to move a limb occurs, even when actual movement of the limb does not in fact take place. Clearly, the accurate real-time determination and classification of the ERD offers many exciting possibilities for the control of peripheral devices via computer analysis. The proposed project aims to research this protocol with a primary application area being computer interfacing and control by severely disabled people. It is stressed, however, that this methodology is general and has numerous other application areas. We propose to research both pre-processing techniques and pattern classification methodologies. Research on the former will concentrate on the use of the multi-dimensional wavelet transform and methods for the extraction of dynamic information, and for the latter on the use of context-dependant neural network algorithms.
