Summary on Grant Application Form
It is planned to investigate the buckling strength of externally-pressurised, closed, steel toroidal shells. The load carrying capability will be investigated numerically for a range of perfect and imperfect geometrical configurations. The proposed cross-sections include cicular, elliptical and D-shaped toroids. Several initial geometric imperfection shapes will be investigated, of both localised and global nature. The purpose of this latter study is to evaluate the imperfection sensitivity of these shells. The aim of this numerical study is to formulate tentative design recommendations with suggestions for future experimental validation.
