Summary on Grant Application Form |
Semi-stable turbulent foams - that is, foams which collapse rather quickly when gas flow stops - are encountered in a range of processing equipment - boilers, flash vessels, distillation and absorption columns, bubble column and slurry reactors, fermenters, pipelines with two-phase flow. Optimal design and operation of this equipment requires knowledge of the dynamic surface properties which stabilise foams, which have rarely been measured, and are hardly ever taken into account. The stability of foam is also of great relevance to manufacturers of dispersed phase products like detergents, or ice cream. We will use laser ellipsometry to measure the surface concentrations and force which stabilise foams, in an Overflowing Cylinder. A video imaging technique will be used to measure foam characteristics. These complementary measurements will support the development of a model predicting the behaviour of gas/liquid foams.
