Summary on Grant Application Form |
Plasma spraying offers the potential for a new processing route for FeNdB permanent magnets. It is radically different from the established commercial techniques and could provide unique qualities in fabrication and properties, particularly for electric motors. Preliminary work involving plasma spraying FeNdB in air shows that sound deposits can be produced but that the magnetic properties are poor owing to partial oxidation. The proposal is aimed at assessing the feasibility of plasma spraying in an inert atmosphere for the deposition of FeNdB magnets. It will comprise modifying the existing plasma spray equipment and determining the influence of atmosphere control, feedstock and the primary deposition parameters on magnetic properties. If the process is proven, a further grant application will be submitted aimed at understanding the critical mechanisms, optimising the alloy composition and producing a demonstration component for an electric motor.
