Summary on Grant Application Form
This research aims to create a process introduction methodology that ensures rapid and effective development of re-engineered product introduction processes and their associated IT systems. In order to improve business performance, business processes must first be studied and then improved in the light of the information technology available and best practice benchmarks. Studying processes by conventional methods is extremely time consuming and the methods used in general do not help the information technologist to develop supporting IT tools. This research will create a Generic Process Database (GPD) which captures and stores information about common business processes so that future studies can be performed by re-using the business process objects from the database. Generic processes will be sought by an analytical study of Business Process data already collected by the partner companies. Appropriate knowledge acquisition tools and modelling methods will be integrated with the GPD to facilitate process information elicitation. Best practice process methodologies will be built into the database. Links to CASE tools will be established so that supporting IT tools can be rapidly prototyped based on the information held in the GPD. The whole will be tested by studying one or more business entity which has not yet been captured and improved.
