Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to apply two relatively new techniques, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) to the study of the relationship between processing history and microstructure and consequent properties of pastes/porous pellets. The quantitative nature of these methods will be exploited and the limits of their ability in studying liquid transport, mass transfer and pore structure investigated. The pastes will contain alumina, starch, bentonite and water, a model for all pastes, whilst also being employed for making catalysts. The aspect of the processing to be studied will be the identified fundamental flows needed to form catalysts into particles or monoliths. The objectives of the project are: (i) to identify how observed microstructures are determined by processing history and the properties of the paste constituents, and(ii) to develop models which can show how liquid phase migration occurs within pastes, and how mass transfer and microstructural properties of the pastes are correlated.
