Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research programme will develop new computer simulation techniques for the measurement of some technologically important quantities: the surface elastic constants and the surface anchoring free energies. The ability to determine these quantities accurately and reliably in simulations of model systems at the molecular level will assist understanding of the microscopic origins of these effects and the way they reflect molecular structure. Ultimately these insights should lead to the synthesis of molecules that give improved performance in liquid crystal display devices.Key Words: Physics, Condensed Matter, Materials, computing, devices, liquid crystals, statistical mechanics, molecular simulation.
