Summary on Grant Application Form
Light from the exterior surfaces of buildings is to be collected by a novel form of fibre-optic panel, channelled by fibre bundles and distributed to areas within buildings which require lighting during the day.Two alternative collectors are proposed, both of which collect light along the length of the fibre.Fluorescent fibres are a fairly recent development, and the daylight conversion efficiency of these needs to be investigated. Lifetime, saturation, temperature dependence and quenching effects will be studied to optimise the performance of a panel made from these.Secondly, refractive/reflective techniques are to be investigated for bringing diffuse light into alignment with fibres embedded within the structure. A computer model will be used to predict the effectiveness of these technqiues and panels will be manufactured with the most promising designs. The two techniques will then be compared, and the viability of the light collecting panels reported. Coupling and transmission losses will be measured, and a termination (light-bulb) designed, culminating in a prototype capable of replacing an incandescent bulb during daylight hours.
