Summary on Grant Application Form
This research will be carried out as a continuation of a research programme currently underway. The field performance of an embedded cantilever retaining wall, singly propped at formation level, is presently being studied. The extension is needed because the start of construction was delayed by 10 months. Post- construction data are vital in determining the performance of the structure once built and the extension would allow this. The research provides an excellent opportunity to monitor all aspects of the construction process, including the steel propping required between the walls to provide stability before the permanent prop slab is cast. Monitoring of these props would provide extra beneficial data. The forces acting within these props will be monitored using vibrating wire load cells and will supplement all other data supplying information on the behaviour of the structure. Additional data will be obtained by the Transport Research Laboratory acting on behalf of the Surrey County Council from vibrating wire strain gauges attached to the temporary props. It is considered that this method of lead measurement is not entirely satisfactory. This research will enable a direct comparison between the two methods of measurement.
