Summary on Grant Application Form |
A common view is emerging that the next generation of automobiles will be radically different from their predecessors in many aspects - the most important change being towards lighter, more energy efficient, environmentally friendly vehicles. This will inevitably lead to a complete change in the way in which these vehicles are built. An opportunity therefore exists to radically redesign the manufacturing facility and research the effects that different design options have on the design of the facility. Performing this in advance of design will allow the overall manufacturing process to be optimised to use future materials and process technology. The project comprises three seperate work packages, each with measurable objectives. The first will establish current best practice and identify future options, the second will simulate these options. The third work package is the design and construction of a research cell to test these options. As a result of this work, many of the implications which the manufacturing route has on the design of the vehicle will be understood at a very much earlier stage in the evolution of automotive designs.
