Summary on Grant Application Form
The interpretation of a high-level PostScript TM description into a sequence of graphics commands or a bitmap is highly time consuming task. We propose to accelerate PostScript TM rendering by designing novel hardware for the core of the language, and by executing in parallel PostScript TM commands on one or more FPGA devices. Such a system will greatly accelerate the rate at which images can be rendered on a display. Hardware for accelerating even a core of the PostScript TM language is unlikely to be realisable on a small number of FPGAs (a typical card may have only 8 FPGAs). A novel aspect of our approach is the use of Virtual Hardware. A large virtual circuit will be designed which contains components for rendering lines, circles, fonts, etc.
