Summary on Grant Application Form
Coplanar waveguide (CPW) is an attractive and increasingly important transmission medium for MIC's, especially at millimetric frequencies; it is uniplanar, allows easy series and shunt connection of components and exhibits relatvely low radiation and spurious coupling. The overall aim of this proposal is to devise and characterise new forms of printed antennas which can be directly integrated into MIC's based on CPW.Broadside radiators which can be operated within the confines of an MIC can be derived topologically either from an open curcuit radiator analogues to a microstrip patch, or from a CPW-fed slot antenna. A wide variety of geometries, derivable from these by cotinuous deformation will be investigated by simulation and measurement. More open and/or asymmetric structures will be exploited to obtain respectively greater band width and general polarisation. Two novel forms of endfire radiator for operation at the edge of a board will be investigated. These are derived from the Vivaldi radiator and inherently broadband. A third class of antenna to be developed is a Broadisde radiator , polarised parallel to the feed line intended for near omnidirectional broadside radiation at a board edge.
