Summary on Grant Application Form
Concrete structures in which reinforcing steel was corroding as a result of carbonation and/or chloride were subjected to surface treatments of various kinds intended to reduce the moisture content of the material. The effectiveness of these surface treatments in reducing the corrosion rate of the embedded steel was assessed for a period of up to 2 years by means of non-destructive electrochemical measurements, potential monitoring and relative humidity measurements of both cored samples exposed to controlled environmental conditions and of structures exposed to natural conditions. Early results have shown that surface treatments of the types used in the project are effective in controlling reinforcement corrosion of carbonated but not of chloride contaminated structures. Monitoring of the structures will be continued for a further 3 years to enable confirmation of the preliminary findings and to study long term weathering effects on the treatments by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Guidance documents will be prepared which would assist the drafting of appropriate standards for repair of carbonated concrete structures by means of surface treatments.
